Tips For Portraits
Here are a few tips and suggestions that should help make sure your portraits are all they can be.
Glasses: If you wear glasses, there's a chance we could get some unwanted reflections in them. The easiest thing to do is just not to wear them, however, I realize many people always wear glasses, and a portrait of them without glasses, just wouldn't be them. In these cases, we have a couple of choices. One is to use a set of frames without the lenses. If you don't have an older pair that the lenses can be removed from, talk to your optometrist or possibly the store you buy your glasses from about borrowing a pair. Many of the newer glasses actually have a coating on them that minimizes reflection. These actually seem to work in most cases. As a last resort, we can try raising the earpieces a little bit. This normally isn't noticeable in the final pictures, however, the slight tilt can sometimes minimize reflection.
Clothes: In many cases, avoid black and white - depending on the location, this can make the exposure harder to deal with. Avoid sleeveless shirts and blouses.
Time of Day: For outdoor locations, the time of day is a factor. Morning or evening normally are the best times, and the middle of the day should be avoided, when possible. If it's summer time, morning, with it's cooler tempatures, works better than evening. For cooler months, evening might be a better choice, when it's warmer.
